SMO Simplified Part 2
Yesterday I gave you a dose of tekkie-talk and did my best to explain social media optimization – Social Media Optimization ( SMO ) is the process by which you make everything you touch, ( sites, videos, podcasts, RSS feeds and blog entries ), more visible and search-able.
In that post I gave you an example of a typical list of links that you can add to the end of an optimized blog entry:
Add to: YouTube | blinklist | del.cio.us | digg | yahoo! | furl ( and the list is huge ).
These links allows people to quickly favorite your blog entry to the social network or community site or any number of other sites to which they belong. Once the post has been added by one person, it will be available to every other member of that community through the site’s search function.
Social media search is driven not by algorithms, but by popular vote. Content rises to the surface through a “democratic” process, whereby the combined opinions of community members determine which content gets the greatest exposure. The voting and rating process is an integral part of almost all social network community sites.
Some of these sites, like del.icious, Yahoo! and furl include categories that cover almost any topic and subject you can think of, other communities are more focused.
YouTube focuses on short videos and, in common with other social network sites, it has a number of features that enable members to vote for, rate, share and distribute the videos they like best. It is essential to understand that, when you create your own videos, your videos need to be compelling, entertaining or unique and different in order to rise above the noise and be voted into “visibility”.
There’s a reason why this business doesn’t appeal to just anybody – it’s a very creative process. Some people are more naturally interested in pursuing something that becomes an outlet for their creative maunderings ( I think that means genius but I’m not really sure ).
There are lots of loose shoestrings to tie together when you want to put on these walking boots. But if you can get them laced up all the way you can stomp through just about anything – and you can do it without even knowing any tekkie-talk, either!
Tommorows post is about an ancient Chinese blogging tactic you can apply to your blog today.
